Austin
Beautiful old library, built in 1929 after Austin became part of the city of Chicago. Named after Henry W. Austin, an early developer of the area, who plotted out the neighborhood streets and parks. Designed by architect Alfred S. Altschuler.
It's in a pretty little green space, tucked behind the Austin Town Hall, now a park district facility with activities for the community. It has a quiet feeling, nestled in the park, though right next to the noisy Lake Street el and urban Central Avenue.
I read Bungalow magazine and Book Links, a periodical for children's lit enthusiasts and teachers. There was a large collection of African American interest too. Took out the newest Mma Ramotswe mystery - The Ladies Detective Agency taking place in Botswana.
I liked the feel of the older library, it has an undefinable quality that the new libraries don't have yet.
No food nearby, just the park surrounding it, and a lovely neighborhood of large old homes called Midway Park.
When I snapped this photo, one of the library workers told me I had to get permission from the CPL to take pictures- somehow a camera may make people wonder who I am and what I'm doing?
